"We're good, we have WhatsApp." It's one of the most common things we hear from Caribbean business owners, and we understand why. WhatsApp is fast, familiar, and almost everyone on the island already has it open. The problem is that WhatsApp was built to help you talk to people who already know you exist. It was never built to help strangers find you in the first place, and that's exactly what advertising is supposed to do.

If WhatsApp is the only tool in your marketing, you're not really advertising. You're just managing the customers you already have.

What WhatsApp Was Actually Built For

WhatsApp is a messaging app. Its entire design is built around private, one-to-one (or small group) conversation: two people, or a handful of people, talking directly. That's a fantastic thing to have once a customer wants to talk to you. It's a terrible thing to rely on if your goal is to put your business in front of people who've never heard of it.

Compare that to a platform built for discovery, like Instagram or Google. Someone can stumble across your restaurant by searching "dinner spots Basseterre" or scrolling a local hashtag, without knowing your name or your number beforehand. WhatsApp has no equivalent. There's no public search, no explore page, no algorithm quietly pushing your business in front of strangers who might love it.

The Opt-In Wall

Here's the part that trips most owners up: to message someone on WhatsApp, you generally need their number, and they need yours saved too for anything beyond a one-off chat. That means your entire WhatsApp "audience" is limited to people who already decided to reach out, usually because they found you somewhere else first, through a friend, a Google listing, an Instagram post, a sign on the road.

WhatsApp didn't bring you that customer. It just gave you somewhere to talk to them once someone else's marketing, or word of mouth, already did the work.

WhatsApp Business Tools Have Real Limits

WhatsApp Business does have some marketing features, like broadcast lists and catalogs, but they come with real ceilings:

None of this makes WhatsApp Business a bad tool. It just makes it the wrong tool for the specific job of finding new customers.

Where WhatsApp Actually Shines

To be clear, we're not telling anyone to drop WhatsApp. For Caribbean businesses, it's often the best tool available for the second half of the customer journey:

That's real value. It's just value that only kicks in after someone has already found you and decided you're worth messaging.

Discovery vs. Conversation

It helps to think of your marketing in two separate jobs: getting found, and closing the sale. They're not the same job, and they don't run on the same tools.

A business that only has WhatsApp is trying to do both jobs with a tool built for just the second one. It's a bit like having a great phone line but no sign on the building. Anyone who already has your number can reach you. Nobody walking by for the first time has any reason to.

What a Complete Funnel Looks Like

  1. Discovery: A customer finds you through a Google search, an Instagram post, or a friend's tag.
  2. Interest: They check your Google reviews, browse your website or Instagram profile, and decide you look legitimate.
  3. Conversation: They message you on WhatsApp to ask a question or check availability.
  4. Sale: You confirm the booking, send the details, and the deal is done.

WhatsApp is doing its job perfectly in step three. The problem is when a business skips steps one and two entirely and wonders why the messages have slowed down.

The Bottom Line

WhatsApp is one of the most useful tools a Caribbean business can have for talking to customers, but it was never designed to advertise to people who don't know you yet. If growth has stalled and "WhatsApp us" is the only call to action your business has, that's usually a sign there's no real discovery layer behind it, nothing pulling new people in before they ever reach for their phone to message you.

Keep WhatsApp for what it's good at. Just don't ask it to do a job it was never built for.
